In the Pokemon games (ie Diamon/Pearl), how do the two games relate?

I am new to these games, I notice they seem to release two at a time. How do the two games relate together, or do they at all?

They are the same exact game in practically every way, except for the fact that certain types of pokemon are exclusive to Diamond or Pearl.

For example, Dialga can only be caught in Diamond, while Palkia can only be caught in Pearl.

i hate both
They are the same game, only differing in the pokemon available. In Pokemon Diamond you have Cranidos and a certain Legendary Pokemon, while in Pearl you get another pokemon like Cranidos, and a different legendary Pokemon. They are the same game in terms of gameplay, there are just a few differences in the pokemon that you are able to catch.
