I think that the proplem started after an automated security update from Microsoft. Both browsers show the "can't find server" message. I reset all the security properties of both browsers to default, deleted cookies ect. alas to no avail. I am running XP. I appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks in advance.

Try turning off your modem, router, and pc. Wait about 5 minutes then cut them back on.

Can't find Server...... That most likely means you are not connected to the internet. I would make sure lunes are connected and any wireless turned on and good if you have wireless.
You most likely installed IE7 - I have seen this issue on HP computers, especially those that were initially Service Pack 1 and then Upgraded to Service Pack 2. I believe it has something to do with the Winsock dll, it could be something from HP that hooks into the IE browser - they do that for their little trouble shooting - I turn off all HP troubleshooting support on my laptop via the services panel. I have no issues there. On other peoples computers who are less tech savvy I just reverted them to IE6 and tell them not to upgrade to IE7, and use Firefox Browser instead - as it works with out locking out your web surfing.
